Stone extraction balloons and baskets are widely available and highly effective tools for the removal of biliary and pancreatic stones. These devices allow removal of stones of many sizes and configurations in the majority of patients. Baskets, especially when used as mechanical lithotripters, still carry a risk of rare but serious complications. Few comparative studies between devices exist, and further studies are warranted, particularly with regard to pancreatic stone extraction. © 2009 American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
