The effect of Ru substitution on GdBa2Cu3O7-delta(Gd123) superconductor was investigated. Polycrystalline samples with starting composition GdBa2(Cu3-xRux)O7-delta(x = 0 to 0.2) were prepared using the solid-state reaction method. X-rays diffraction (XRD) patterns showed the presence of Gd123 peaks in all samples. An impurity phase, Ba(Gd0.5Ru0.5)O(3)was observed in the Ru substituted samples. Scanning electron micrographs showed that the grain size decreased with increasing Ru. The resistance-temperature curves showed semiconductor-like normal state behavior for all Ru substituted samples. The derivative of the resistance with respect to temperature showed two peaks (T(p1)andT(p2)) which widened as Ru was increased. The lowering of the lower peak,T(p2)indicated impurities at the grain boundary where the samples became fully superconducting due to proximity effects belowT(p2). Ru substituted GdBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta)showed a more severe suppression of the transition temperature compared with YBa2Cu3O7-delta, EuBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta)and SmBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta)and the possible causes are discussed in this paper.
