For the digital transformation of their business, companies conduct specific change projects. In comparison to large companies, small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) have specific constraints, e.g. limited resources. Many proceedings are now available to support SMEs in their transformation process towards industry 4.0 (I4.0). The current scientific state of affairs is presented by a literature review and the publications are evaluated in their applicability for SMEs. The work was carried out in the research project OBerA, which aims to support companies in the metalworking industry in the digitalization of their system landscape. The project consortium consists out of five SME companies from the region of Franconia in Bavaria and Siemens as technology partner. It is carried out that existing proceedings still have drawbacks and further research work is needed. (C) 2019 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.
