A spiral coil heat exchanger consisting of a number of horizontal layers of spirally wound, finned tubes connected to vertical manifolds at the inner and outermost turns of each coil has been studied. A theoretical model predicting the thermal performance of the spiral coil heat exchanger as a cooling and dehumidifying unit has been developed based on the assumption that the air is unmixed as it flows past each spiral coil turn. Experiments on a laboratory model of the spiral coil unit were conducted and the results obtained confirmed the theoretical predictions. Performance charts of enthalpy effectiveness and humidity ratio effectiveness vs Ntu suitable for air-handler unit design have also been presented. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
