A model is presented for the effect of mechanical deformation on the critical temperature in epitaxial films of strontium-doped lanthanum cuprate. The model, which accounts for the interior geometry and deformation of the crystalline cell, yields predictions that agree remarkably well with the experimental findings of Locquet et al. [Proc.
