Villagers' self-governance is a fundamental form of democracy in China's rural areas. Villagers' self-governance may have a different meaning from person to person. Villagers' self-governance has been based upon the Chinese Constitution and China Villagers' Commission Organizing Act promulgated in 1987, the latter of which was modified in 1998. Villagers' self-governance has had a great impact on the rural life of Chinese farmers and boosted China's rural democratic developments, but presently, it faces problems and new challenges, and some conflicts have arisen from it. This thesis, in terms of constitutionalism, dwells on its contributions to China's society, principles of villagers' self-governance, its existing problems, and dedicates itself to the solution of the problems existing in villagers' self-governance, and explores possible improvements and reform of villagers' self-governance.
