No association of serum progesterone (P) levels on the day of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) injection and pregnancy outcome following in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) in stimulation protocols using ganirelix in patients of an older reproductive age

Some studies have suggested an inverse relationship between serum progesterone (P) on the day of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) injection when the controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) regimen used the luteal phase leuprolide acetate protocol. The present study retrospectively evaluated pregnancy outcome in women aged 36-42 using a gonadotropin releasing hormone antagonist (ganirelix) protocol. Fresh embryo transfer was deferred and all embryos were cryopreserved for serum P levels >= 2.0ng/mL. No association was found with rising P levels up to 1.9ng/mL. A possible trend for lower pregnancy rates was noted at the higher serum P levels if the serum estradiol on the day of hCG was lower.
