In this paper, we present two techniques to enhance the bandwidth and reduce the size of microstrip antenna. These techniques are loading multicouple stagger slits in the patch and loading multicouple stagger slots on the ground plane, by suitable designs, two TM10 modes are excited at two close frequencies. The designs based on the structures with four slits on the patch and four slots in the ground plane are simulated and fabricated and the results are compared with the conventional rectangular microstrip patch antenna. It is found that for the ultralow profile microstrip antenna the slots in the ground plane gives the most wide bandwidth (three times the conventional one), while the slits in the patch gives the most reduction in size (more than 60% compared to the conventional one).
