The history of the 4004

The personal computer has become a big market for microprocessors, and is considered by many as the microprocessor's primary use. From its humble beginning 25 years ago, Intel's 4004 wafers, and the microprocessor industry in general, have grown to such an extent that nearly 70% of all semiconductors sold worldwide are either microprocessors, microcontrollers or their related components. There has also been an explosion of applications during the last 25 years. Microprocessors can be found in pocket calculators, organizers and cellular phones. The microprocessor has improved the quality, cost and functionality of traditional electronic equipment and has enabled thousands of new applications deemed impossible before its advent.
