Peripheral blood findings are crucial for an early diagnosis of chronic myeloproliferative disorders. They are helpful for sub-classification and differential diagnosis with other myeloid disorders. Total blood count and careful analysis of peripheral blood smears are essential during the follow-up for detecting an evolution toward an acute phase. Illustrations of typical cytologic aspects and possible pitfalls are presented.
