The intermolecular Pauson-Khand reactions of ethyl trans-2-phenylethynylcyclopropanecarboxylate (1t) and [amino (trans-2-phenylethynylcyclopropyl)methylidene]pentacarbonylchromium (9) with norbornene lead to ester and metal carbene functionalized exo-tricyclodecenones 3-6 and 13-16, respectively, in moderate to high yields. The incorporation of the alkyne is moderately regioselective but less diastereoselective. Pairs of diastereomers are isolated after column chromatography, which can subsequently be separated by recrystallization. The minor diastereomer 3 and the major diastereomer 15 are characterized by X-ray structure analysis.
