Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus -: Epidemiology and update

MRSA has emerged as a major cause of CA S. aureus infections. A small number of MRSA strains predominate in the community, and may possess unique fitness characteristics. Emergence of new MRSA strains in the community may be contributing to an increased overall burden and severity of CA S. aureus infections. SSTIs are the most common manifestation of CA-MRSA infection. Invasive infections account for a minority of CAMRSA infections; factors predisposing persons to invasive manifestations are not well understood. Optimal strategies for prevention of CA-MRSA have yet to be defined; however, interventions focusing on increased awareness, prompt recognition and appropriate management of new infections, enhanced hygiene, and maintenance of a clean environment have been successful at limiting transmission. © 2008 Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.
