The reading achievements of a group of severely and profoundly hearing-impaired school leavers educated within a natural aural approach

Reading levels were investigated in a group of profoundly and severely hearing-impaired children of school leaving age and with hearing losses greater than 65dB(HL). The main criterion for selection of children was that at the time of testing they should have been educated for at least the last five years of their schooling within natural aural programmes. Both the reading measures and the procedures used in the analysis of data were selected in order to compare results with a previous, very influential study by Conrad (1979). Contrary to Conrad's findings, the results for the group of severely and profoundly hearing-impaired children studied indicate a group for whom reading levels beyond functional literacy are attained Such levels, and the intricate link that is seen within the approach between spoken language and reading levels, mean that for these children access to curriculum at KS3 was a reality rather than an elusive dream.
