摘要
The Navy has begun to leverage innovative and emerging technologies, like augmented reality (AR), to provide robust training aimed at advancing fleet readiness. Previous research has demonstrated the effectiveness of novel AR training scenarios in shipboard environments. These training technologies have resulted in a 32% increase in immediate learning gains for junior Sailors. However, the Navy has also placed a high priority on providing Sailors with training opportunities closer to home. Therefore, innovative AR training technologies must also be validated for use in pier side learning environments. The current paper discusses the evaluation and operational suitability of AR training within pier side learning environments. Leveraging AR training scenarios previously demonstrated and evaluated with Sailors onboard the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), the current paper discusses the evaluation of AR training within Carrier-Advanced Reconfigurable Training System (C-ARTS), stationed at Norfolk Naval Base. The purpose of the evaluation was as follows: i) determine the extent to which AR training can improve learning gains within pier side environments, ii) compare the level of learning gains against those previously demonstrated within shipboard environments, and iii) evaluate AR training operational feasibility in the C-ARTS environment, where Sailors are already receiving training. Three Sailors from the CVN 78's Center of Excellence (CoE) participated in this evaluation. The results of this evaluation are discussed and compared to previous research in which similar AR training scenarios were developed specifically for shipboard use. Based on the results of the evaluation, AR is suitable for both shipboard and pier side environments and can lead to significant learning gains for Sailors of all expertise levels-from Novice to Expert.
