Influence of pulse waveforms on electrodeposition of Zn coating

摘要
Zn coatings were electrodeposited successfully from a ChCl based ionic liquid with four different pulse waveforms, namely, square pulse, sine pulse, sawtooth pulse and triangular pulse. The compositions and microstructures of the Zn coatings were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The adhesion and corrosion resistance of the Zn coatings on magnesium alloy was evaluated using scratch tests and electrochemical polarisation tests respectively. It was shown that the pulse modes have a great influence on the morphologies and microstructures of the Zn coatings. The Zn coating deposited from sawtooth pulse was evidently uniform, smooth and dense compared with other coatings. Correspondingly, the sawtooth pulse coating exhibited better adhesion and corrosion resistance in comparison with other pulses.
