Structural and magnetic properties of the ThCr2Si2-type PrNi2Si2, PrNi2Ge2, NdNi2Si2 and NdNi2Ge2 compounds

We report on single crystal refinements of the tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type compounds PrNi2Si2, PrNi2Ge2, NdNi2Si2 and NdNi2Ge2. The magnetic properties of PrNi2Ge2 have been investigated by magnetic measurements and neutron diffraction experiments. The PrNi2Ge2, compound orders antiferromagnetically below T-N=24 (1) K with an amplitude-modulated structure (k=0, 0, 0.200). The nickel atom is non magnetic and the Pr moments are parallel to the c-axis with a value of 3.3 mu (B) at 2 K. A new neutron diffraction pattern of the NdNi2Si2 compound has been recorded at 2 K and its analysis confirms the occurrence of the in-plane (a, b) modulated magnetic structure for the Nd sublattice in these compounds. The main correlations between magnetic properties and crystallographic data are analysed in the RNi2X2 (R=Pr, Nd) silicides and germanides. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
