摘要
Augmented Reality (AR) is a technique whereby real world data is overlaid with computer generated data in real-time. This duality of data types opens the possibility of a new methodology to product design and retail. This paper describes work being undertaken at Staffordshire University to focus and apply these methodologies and develop practical applications to assist the product design industry. Using AR technology product designers can combine real-time video and virtual models to view a new product in real world surroundings without having to create actual physical prototypes. AR can also be used to involve consumers in the design process and to aid sales and marketing. Although these techniques are suitable for any product design process this paper describes the work undertaken in conjunction with the UK tableware industry based in Stoke-On-Trent. The initial aim is to develop systems to support the early stages of the design process.
