A consideration of Bucklandiella (Bryophyta, Grimmiaceae) in South America, with a taxonomic re-assessment of Racomitrium looseri

Diversity of the Grimmiaceae subfam. Racomitrioideae in South America is briefly outlined. This subfamily is represented by three genera on this continent, namely Codriophorus P.Beauv., Bucklandiella Roiv. and Racomitrium Brid. s. str. which altogether consist of, respectively, one, 18 and three species and one subspecies. Racomitrium looseri Then, a species described from central Chile, is taxonomically re-assessed. It is shown that this species has incorrectly been considered conspecific with R. lamprocarpum A.Jaeger [equivalent to Bucklandiella lamprocarpa Bednarek-Ochyra & Ochyra] Distinctly recurved leaf margins at the base, presence of the (1-)2-3-seriate basal marginal borders of pellucid, hyaline and straight-walled cells and strongly pseudopapillose laminal and epidermal costal cells indicate the conspecificity of R. looseri with Bucklandiella orthotrichacea (Mull. Hal.) Bednarek-Ochyra & Ochyra. This species name is lectotypified and the global ranges of B. lamprocatpa and B. orthotrichacea are briefly reviewed.
