Gender comparisons in pulmonary embolism (Results from the International Cooperative Pulmonary Embolism Registry [ICOPER])

Although differences between men and women have been increasingly recognized in the presentation and management of coronary artery disease, few studies have compared men and women with acute pulmonary embolism (PE). We therefore undertook a study of gender comparisons based on data from the International Cooperative Pulmonary Embolism Registry (ICOPER), a cohort of 2,454 consecutive patients with PE from 52 hospitals in 7 countries.(1) We investigated clinical presentation, diagnostic evaluation, treatment, and outcome in men and women.
