We report on optical characterization results of a 5d band insulator SrHfO3 which has attracted much attention as an electronic material. We found that the optical conductivity calculated from the measured reflectivity spectra in the wide photon energy region is quite consistent with the theoretical calculation result for this compound. The phonon modes predicted from the group analysis are identified in the Raman and Infrared spectra. And also, we observed rather strong photoluminescence signals with excitation of the 325 nm light for the polycrystalline sample. These optical responses are compared with the properties of other similar materials, SrTiO3 and SrZrO3.
