Hungarian University and College Students on Democracy

A group of andragogy students of the Eotvos Lorand University Budapest initiated a research on the attitude of university freshmen by 1750 questionnaires with the title "Universal Values on the University". The research sample was representative of the Northern Region of Hungary Results of the survey indicate that the students' basic theoretical knowledge of democracy is well established, but applying it into practice they have shown uncertainty Their main sources of knowledge in the field are the media, their families and their former school lessons, yet not their dedicated civic studies lessons. According to the results public trust is critically low among university students, accompanied by a low level of social activities and participation. The results of the research on students show somewhat controversial values of lower willingness in taking responsibilities and an attitude to follow norms yet less willingness for co-operation, the presence of aggression yet an agreeable measure of electoral willingness with a positive opinion on the European Union.
