The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency proposed new rules for HCl emissions from steel pickling and acid regeneration systems. The effects of these rules on equipment requirements and operating procedures in rod and wire pickling are discussed. The growing need for more efficient and cost-effective methods for removing heavy metals to meet increasingly stringent regulations governing metal finishing wastewater discharge together with the current regulations on parts cleaning and commonly used metal cleaning methods and cyanide treatment are also discussed.
