Educated women, being empowered, liberate themselves from various personal, psychological and sociological constraints. The twenty-first century women are strengthening themselves to manage Fortune 500 companies successfully while sustaining their diverse responsibilities including nurturing their children as devoted mothers. Using the education, they obtained in high schools and colleges, women are becoming promising faculties at higher education levels and are taking an active part in the modernization process of our country. These women in higher education have crucial responsibility in shaping the behaviour and mental make-up of the present-day younger generation. As far as higher education is considered, the statistics for women serving in colleges and universities have been showing constant increase. For example, if we take 1993-94 data, the proportion of women teachers in higher education was 18%, 21% in affiliated colleges and 11.6% in universities. Education at a glance (2013) mentions that the number of female teachers per hundred male teachers in higher education is 59. The Report of the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE 2018-19) mentions that out of total number of 1,416,299 teachers for 2018-19 about 57.85% are male teachers and 42.15% are female teachers. At the all India level, there are 73 female teachers per 100 male teachers. It is 58 female teachers per 100 male teachers at the universities. Considering the representation of women in terms of gender distribution in the field of higher education, this paper is an exploratory study, which attempts to identify the issues and concerns pertaining to women academicians in particular at higher levels of education. The researcher conducted a survey which included 106 women academicians at various cadres. The researcher prepared a questionnaire and collected data in the form of their responses through Google Forms. The data was analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. The study highlighted the problems and constraints of women teachers and concludes with some suggestions create conducive working environment to ensure integrity of women academicians.
