A microcrystalline, homogeneous and transparent sot - gel silica coating has been developed to avoid the degradation and improve the wettability of aluminium matrix composites reinforced with SiC particles. Composite aluminium matrix samples have been made by cold powder compaction, and the coating efficiency has been checked by melting the samples several temperature and times. The coating reduces the appearance of Al4C3, showing that the degradation resistance of the new material is much higher than that of the uncovered SiC particles composite one.
