摘要
Minimally Invasive Surgery offers clear advantages over conventional surgery, but issues such as patient safety, surgeon dexterity and ergonomics remain. This paper describes different solutions with respect to these issues, which all fall under the common denominator of 'smart instrumentation', i.e., adding intelligence to the surgical instruments. This intelligence refers to the optimization of the design process, the online interpretation of measurements into higher level information, and the efficient and stringent feedback of this information to the surgeon.
