Grain growth behavior of fine-grained silicon nitride ceramics

摘要
Fine-grained silicon nitride ceramics with the average grain size of 180 nm were prepared by hot-pressing fine beta powder at low temperature. The stable microstructures of the fine-grained ceramic were revealed by slow rate of grain growth during annealing at 1800 degrees C. The grain growth behavior was evaluated quantitatively and statistically using image analysis. Fine and stable microstructures of the fine-grained ceramics resulted in superplastic deformation at 1500 degrees C. The grain growth behavior of the fine-grained ceramics with nuclei was also investigated by annealing. It was shown that abnormal and anisotropic grain growth took place from the nuclei by which resulted the composite microstructures have been developed.
