In this paper we present an innovation in computer-assisted dental implantology In contrast to the well known and established navigation systems using optical tracking technology and marker based registration this new approach, the so called implant location system (developed by Tactile Technologies Ltd., Israel), applies a completely different registration procedure as well as a new kind of intraoperative guidance for the surgeon. In principle the method combines computer-based planning with modified surgical templates to support the implant drilling. In contrast to conventional templates this system allows for an intraoperative modification of the planned implant positions and an immediate fabrication of "guidance sheaths'' (rapid prototyping) according to the modified plan even during the operation.
