Presented is a composite optoelectronic high-speed high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) cable with the application of an optical link running on four thin GI 50/125 mu m plastic optical fibres to serve upcoming demand in consumer electronics. The thin fibres enable a compact optical sub-assembly that in return fits inside the cable connector. The main advantages of this technology are pointed out and the packaging of the composite HDMI connectors outlined. Cable performance and in particular the waveform diagrams as well as bit error ratio results at 3.4 Gbit/s that enable full HD video transmission over 10 m are included.
