The crystal structure of Escherichia coli integration host factor complexed with DNA reveals how the sequence-specificity of DNA binding can be determined almost entirely by the structural features of the DNA itself and not by direct readout of the base sequence. There are lessons to be drawn for other DNA-binding motifs. (C) Current Biology Ltd.
