F-1s binding energies of MFn-BaF2-ErF3 system glasses (M=Zn, Al, Ga, In, Sc, Zr and Hf; n=2 for Zn, n=3 for Al, Ga, In and Sc; n=4 for Zr and Hf) and nine kinds of related fluoride crystals (MFn, BaF2 and ErF3) were measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The F-1s binding energies of the related fluoride crystals exhibited a fairly good correlation for the electrostatic interaction between F- ions and the surrounding Mn+, Ba2+ or Er3+ cations. The F-1s binding energies of MFn-BaF2-ErF3 system glasses were nearly equal to a sum in molar ratio of the F-1s binding energies of glass-constituting fluoride crystals.
