摘要
Diamond coatings are available for some industrial products, such as cutting tools, for some years now. Since then, the research focus has shifted away from diamond coatings for cutting tools towards ultrathin and multifunctional diamond coatings. For the synthesis of ultrathin diamond coatings (<= 100 nm) interdisciplinary research was and is essential. This article elicits the essential evolutional milestones necessary for ultrathin film synthesis and discusses new areas of application, which arise from the tenuity of the coating and the tunability of its properties.
