Results of the SINDRUM-II experiment

Tests of lepton-flavor conservation (LFC) are very sensitive probes of new physics beyond the Standard Model. The most stringent upper limit on a LF-nonconserving decay mode now comes from the search for mu(-) --> e(-) conversion on titanium with the SINDRUM II [1] spectrometer at PSI: Gamma(mu(-)Ti --> e(-)Ti(g.s.))/Gamma(mu(-)Ti capture) < 6.1 x 10(-13) (90% CL). This new limit improves on the best previous result by a factor of 7. A search for the charge-changing mu(-) --> e(+) conversion yielded new upper limits which improve on our previous results by a factor of 2.5.
