Lack of communication between the supporters of different paradigms in community ecology has led to inconsistencies and lack of progress in certain topics. Three case studies are presented, (1) the theory of the realized and fundamental niche, (2) the methodology used to describe the realized niche and (3) the use of the Shannon-Weaver measure of diversity.
