A survey of methods for injection of heavy ions in synchrotrons and storage rings is given. The three main injection methods-stacking in the transverse phase space, stacking in the longitudinal phase space, and ion stripping-are described in detail. Combinations of multiturn injection with linear coupling, beam cooling, and rf stacking are represented. Many examples and original results of the author on the simulation of the injection in the Nuclotron booster are given. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics.
