Job satisfaction, job reward characteristics, and employees' problem drinking behaviors

The ascendant dominance of organizations in American life (Perrow, 1991) raises critical questions about the effects of organizations on individual and social behavior. Given the centrality of work for adults of both genders in American culture, numerous issues may be raised about the effects of formally organized work life on motivations, aspirations, lifestyle choices, deviant behavior, and behavioral choices in settings outside work. Within behavioral science, tensions center around whether observed differences in the behavior of persons employed in organizations stem from features internal to individuals and/or their differential backgrounds or whether these differences are consequences of their contemporary experiences in work structures and processes.
