This paper is proposed to understand the new development trend on the globalisation of operations (manly including manufacturing and R&D). Specifically, this paper attempts to unfold the discussion in the context of a developing country, i.e. China, and explore what is actually happening there. Based on two case studies, this paper provides a foundation for the further extension of current internationalisation theories to take global R&D into consideration and emphasizes that companies from different countries might follow different approaches to globalise their research, development, and production.
