摘要
Power transmission facilities in the U. S. are undergoing a transformation due to increased use of distributed generation sources such as wind and solar power that are supplying power to the grid. The current power grid system is also antiquated and in need of substantial retrofits to make it more efficient and reliable. The new energy transmission system being designed and built to optimize power delivery with two way communication between the producer and end user is known as "Smart Grid". The increased activity in the construction of power transmission facilities and installation of new technologies into the current power system has developed a need for the construction professionals knowledgeable about smart grid Concepts. In order to meet the needs of the construction industry, a Course was developed that focuses on the construction of high voltage electric transmission systems and the implementation of new communication systems between elements of the electrical system. The course was developed by researching smart grid technologies and interviewing construction and utility leaders in the electrical transmission and distribution area. The course was implemented in Fall 2012 in a joint undergraduate and graduate course in industrial Construction. After the course was completed, a survey of the students was performed to determine the effectiveness of the Course and also to determine their thoughts about smart grid technologies. Information on the developed course is presented along with results of the student surveys on smart grid technologies.
