Successful use of risperidone in adults with autism and pervasive developmental disorders: case reports

Autism and other pervasive developmental disorders encompass a wide variety of clinical presentations and cognitive impairment. Most patients display repetitive thoughts and behaviors, impulsive-aggressive actions, and decreased social interaction. Well-tolerated drug treatment can ameliorate symptoms, allowing patients to participate in behavioral programs. Conventional neuroleptics have been effective in reducing stereotypes, aggression, and withdrawal. The longterm requirement for drug treatment means that medication with fewer side effects, particularly movement disorders, would be desirable. The three cases presented suggest that risperidone may have a place in the treatment of patients with pervasive developmental disorders.
