A polycrystalline alpha-alumina matrix composite fiber containing nano-sized YAG particles was prepared by sol-gel method. An alpha alumina matrix composite fiber with fine and homogeneous microstructure could be successfully fabricated by incorporating nano-sized YAG particles and adding alpha alumina seed particles. YAG particles were homogeneously dispersed within the matrix grain as well as at grain boundaries. The effects of seed particles and YAG on crystallization and microstructure of the composite fiber were discussed.
