Exceptional diagnostic findings in uterine biopsies of the mare

This paper presents extraordinary diagnostic findings in the equine uterus, which were found in only seven out of 10.000 biopsy samples (1994 to October 2005): using conventional histological methods the following diagnoses were made: i) a severe polyphasic and partly pyogranulomatous inflammation with granule formation of numerous intralesional bacterial colonies consistent with the histomorphological characteristics of a botryomycosis (n=2), ii) a severe granulomatous endometritis with accentuated infiltration of eosinophilic granulocytes resembling "larva migrons granulomas" (n=2) and iii) a severe xanthogranulomatous inflammation (n=3). Besides the clinical context of these diagnostic findings an aetiopathological discussion is given within the paper. Unlike common diagnoses in the equine uterus a prognostic assessment regarding these remarkable findings can not be given.
