A growing need for phased arrays in commercial markets has pushed for lower cost and much smaller arrays. Of particular interest is the delivery of high-data/high-throughput systems, including 5G connectivity. In this paper, we illustrate a design method to enable 75% lower cost aperture for a phased array, while maintaining electrical performance requirements. We are proposing a unique approach with a monolithic dielectric substrate for the aperture. Two feeding techniques are discussed for manufacturing ease and for direct integration with beamforming circuitry. Measurements for a proof-of-concept aperture are provided.
