Intense-heavy-ion-beam transport through an insulator beam guide for heavy ion fusion

摘要
We study an intense-heavy-ion-beam transport through an insulator beam guide by a numerical simulation in heavy ion fusion. In our previous papers [Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 35, L120 (1996); Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 37, L471 (1998)] we proposed a new system for electron and proton beam transport using an insulator beam guide. We apply this system to a singly charged cesium (Cs+) beam transport and a lead (Pb+) ion beam transport. An intense heavy ion beam creates a local electric field on the insulator inner surface, and generates a plasma on the surface of the insulator guide. Electrons are extracted from the plasma, and the beam charge is effectively neutralized by the electrons. The electron extraction is self-regulated by the net space charge of the beam. Consequently, an intense heavy ion beam can be efficiently transported by the proposed simple system.
