摘要
Love is the basic social emotion of human being and the basic trait of human personality. The love in Beloved exists in the individual, family and community of slaves. There are four kinds of love: self-love, the love between mother and daughter, the love between couples, and the love among community. It is these four kinds of love that enable the oppression on slaves bearable, that enable African American to survive in the slavery. The liberty of slaves is not the passive liberty brought by Lincoln's The Emancipation Proclamation, but the liberation of self caused by the awakening of love in slaves' personality.
