It is the position of The British Dietetic Association that a good quality balanced diet will meet most people's nutritional needs. When people choose to take vitamin/mineral supplements they are advised to select a product formulated in line with dietary reference values to prevent the risk of overdosing, which can occur when high single doses or many supplements are taken. Vitamin and mineral supplements may be recommended for at-risk groups and in particular circumstances, provided that benefits have been clearly established through scientific evidence. The use of supplements for very specific medical conditions and in situations of acute illness requires medical supervision. State Registered Dietitians (SRDs) have the expertise to provide appropriate advice, support and motivation in this area.
