Structure and magnetic characteristics of novel SmCo-based hard magnetic alloys

摘要
We have successfully synthesized novel SmCo7-xMx (M = 3d transition metal or normal metal) intermetallic compounds. The structural and magnetic properties of SmCo7-xMx compounds have been investigated using powder X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. SmCo7-xMx crystallizes in a hexagonal TbCu7 structure with space group of P6/mmm, and Z = 1. According to the structural refinement, the M dopants occupy the 2e and 3 g crystal positions based on their electronegativities. SmCo7-xMx compounds are strongly ferromagnetic and exhibit uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The saturation moment has been calculated with a magnetic valence model, the calculated results agree well with those of experiment. The structural stability of SmCo7-xMx compounds is related to the effective Sm/(Co,M) atomic radius ratio (R-A) and the difference in electronegativity (X-A) between Sm and (Co, M). According to our calculation, the SmCo 1:7-type structure can be stabilized in range from 1.08(5) to 1.12(9) for R-A and -1.04(4) to -0.94(4) for X-A. (C) 2006 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.
