Copper nanowires have been synthesized using a direct-current electrochemical deposition method with current densities down to 1 mA/cm(2) on a honeycomb anodic aluminium oxide template. A high pore-filling rate was achieved on the template and uniform arrays of nanowires with diameter of 60-80 nm were obtained. This paper reports SEM observations of the morphology of the deposits and cross-sectional TEM observations of the template and deposited nanowires. The template formation and the nanowire growth mechanism will be discussed in the light of the microscopy observations.
