Anemia in myelodysplastic syndromes: morphology, cytochemistry, cytogenetics and prognosis.

Cells of blood and bone marrow from 61 patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) were studied morphocytochemically and cytogenetically. Macrocytic, normocytic normochromic, normocytic hypochromic anemias were found in 31, 16 and 14 cases, respectively. In patients with macro/normocytic normochromic anemia erythrocytes are characterized by marked dysplasia, normal karyotype or syndrome 5q-. In 14 patients with hypochromic anemia red cell volume (MCV) was reduced, anisocytosis was high due to the presence of microcytes. Hb and red cell content in these patients was less than in other patients (p < 0.05), karyotype had more than 2 anomalies or monosomia 7. Erythrocytic index MCV is a prognostic factor. Survival median in MCV >95 fl was 57.0 months, in MCV < 95 fl it was 17.5 months (p = 0.05).
