Investigation on the Removal of toxic Chromium Ion from Waste Water using Fe2O3 Nanoparticles

This study investigated the applicability of hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) nanoparticles for the selective removal of toxic heavy metal ion, Cr6+ from water. The hematite nanoparticles of 13 nm were synthesized using a modified sol gel method and characterized by Xray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy. Experiments were carried out for the removal of Cr6+ ions from water using alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles. The effects of contact time and alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticle dosage were studied on the removal of Cr6+ ions. The removal of Cr6+ ions was found to increase with increase in alpha-Fe2O3 dosage. The adsorption of Cr6+ reached equilibrium rapidly within 30 minutes. The results suggest that the synthesized alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles may be used as an effective adsorbent for the removal of Cr6+ ions from aqueous solutions. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd.
