Using yohimbine, an alkaloid of the yohimbine tree bark, to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) has long been debated. Moderate success was achieved with psychological impotence, but the effect in organic ED was minimal. The authors observed that smokers rarely respond to yohimbine. The authors measured nocturnal penile tumescence after giving two different doses of yohimbine to 18 nonsmoking patients with ED. Nine patients (50%) with less severe ED (better initial rigidity, higher serum testosterone levels, and higher sexual health questionnaire scores) completed intercourse in >75% of attempts, indicating that yohimbine may be useful for organic ED.
