Forces deriving from blood flow shear modulate vascular adherence and transendothelial migration of leukocytes into inflamed tissues, but the mechanisms by which shear is sensed are unclear. In this issue, Fine et al. (2016. J. Cell Biol. http://dx.doi.org/10.1083/jcb.201603109) identify the guanosine nucleotide exchange factor GEFH1 as critical for shear stress induced transendothelial neutrophil migration.
